Disability pride flag

Bristol, Bath and Exeter Mortgages Online are very proud to be celebrating Disability Pride Month.

What is Disability Pride Month?

Disability Pride Month has been described as a day to “accept and honour each person’s uniqueness” and “promote visibility and mainstream awareness” of positive pride felt by people with disabilities, according to AmeriDisability.

For the disabled community, the month encourages self-acceptance and embracing all disabilities.

How do we support the disabled community?

Although we are a small team we have a full inclusive employment policy, with one of our senior managers being a full-time wheelchair user and Tallulah, Phil’s daughter lives with a rare form of Ataxia, a progressive neurological condition.

During Covid, we made significant changes to the way we carried out our consultations by increasing our use of Zoom and Teams. A consequence of this has been that our clients and potential clients have greater access to us, appointment times and being supported by family and friends. This is of course a benefit to all our clients, but in particular we have found clients that may have mobility issues or are visually impaired find the benefits of having a consultation from the comfort of their own homes is a definite bonus.

For those clients who are visually impaired, the ability to screen share documents and highlight relevant sections has been a great advantage. As a number of participants can take part at any time, family, sign language translators and other involved parties can also participate.

This has been such a success that the vast majority of all of consultations are carried out this way.

We are also official sponsors of The Brightwell, a Centre supporting those living with chronic neurological conditions, based in Bradley Stoke, Bristol. Our chosen Charity for fundraising is Ataxia UK

We have made a commitment and will continue to support the disabled community on an on- going basis.
